Halloween is almost here and it is still time to make your kids the costume of their dreams. I am thrilled to partner with Primary.com again on another fun DIY costume. Primary.com is a one a stop shop for blank clothing and every color. Don’t let their simplicity fool you, Primary.com quality is amazing. You can shop by color and clothing style which makes shopping and designing a costume a breeze.
This year Rosie wanted to include our dog in her costume and I instantly thought of a LION and a scarecrow. Scarecrows are typically dressed in overalls but I wanted something a little more fancy for my girl. I searched Primary.com for neutral colors like brown and orange. From there I found a neat pattered leggings and designed my shirt. Instead of overalls I used a tulle skirt for my fancy scarecrow. I knew I wanted needed a denim so I searched denim and found a ton of options on Primary.com. I went with a denim jacket to complete my scarecrow shopping list.
Here are instructions for the Scarecrow & Lion Costume along with links to the clothes at Primary.com.
Primary Kids Clothes
Additional Supplies
- Scarecrow Kit
- Hot Glue Gun
- Heat & Bond or Interfacing
- Black Sharpie
- Wired Burlap Ribbon
- Iron or Circuit Mini Press
- Scissors or Rotary Cutter
- Fabric Glue
- Lion Mane
SCARECROW SHIRT
Step 1:
Iron your orange primary.com shirt before applying your heat and bond or interfacing!
Trace out your heat and bond or interfacing to apply to your shirt.
Heat and bond/ interfacing will stabilize your shirt and keep it from rolling. Don’t skip this step! Iron on your interfacing or heat and bond to your shirt.
Step 2
- Cut open your primary kids checkered leggings at crouch. Trace and apply your heat and bond.
- Use your sharpie and evenly mark straight lines on back of leggings. Pro tip use the checkered pattern on the leggings as a guide.
- Cut out your leggings into strips.
Step 3
- Place your legging strips on your orange shirt and use your sharpie to make even horizontal lines.
- Use scissors/rotary cutter to cut on the lines. Be sure to cut only the top layer.
Step 4
Create a basket weave pattern with your leggings and orange shirt by alternating the leggings vertically on your shirt. Repeat until your shirt is a complete basket weave print. Use fabric glue between each weave to secure the leggings to the shirt.
(Optional) Use rope to tie the ends of your shirt or cut away access.
SCARECROW SKIRT
Use your back tulle skirt from Primary.com .
Open one layer of the skirt and place your hay skirt from your scarecrow kit into the first layer. Secure hay skirt with velcro and fluff out and your skirt is complete.
SCARECROW HAT
Use scraps of fabric from your leggings and hay from your scarecrow kit. Layer it with your wired burlap ribbon for a finish look. You can get creative or copy my design. I added hay underneath the hat for extra pizazz.
JEAN JACKET
(Optional) Cut your jean jacket to your desired length. I cut my jacket extra short for a dramatic look and to show off the shirt. Add your hay cuffs from your scarecrow kit to your jacket sleeve and around the collar. I love how it makes the costume look like a real scarecrow.
Dog Lion Costume
Use your brown zip-up hoodie for your dog. Be sure to order a size that fits your dog. Our lion is wearing a size 6-8 but could use the next size up. Add your lion mane and you you have a lion!
That is it. This fancy scarecrow and lion are ready to find the yellow brick road. Be sure to check out my DIY costumes from last year. Have a look at Primary.com and let me know what would you like me to crate next year.
Real Life, Always.
